Asda Heroes

Encouraging young people to become active citizens in our communities

Let's make a difference in the community and learn about the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

The Content

The resources will cover the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals with the focus on SDG 1 'No Poverty', SDG 2 'Zero Hunger' and SDG 12 'Responsible Consumption'.

Along their journeys we will showcase careers that are involved within the food industry so they can discover hidden careers as well as participate in a competition where they can present their ideas at the end of the year.

Why should your school engage in this programme?

We have designed the programme with the global citizenship and sustainable education in mind.

We will encourage active citizenship where the young people engage in meaningful social action and create a positive impact within their community.

We will help your young people explore hidden careers and engage with a national employer.

We will hit various Gatsby Benchmarks such as 4 & 5 as well as develop key employability skills.

The Vision

To create global citizens who are aware of issues that we face as a community and as a planet. Developing pupil's creativity and confidence we will deliver resources based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that will enhance their thirst for learning and showcase careers with Asda.

The Plan

Through sustainable education we will engage with primary school students about the issue of food, food waste and hunger. After a launch at Asda House, you will then work with our Community Champions to develop projects that impact your local community.

Through a central bank of resources our champions will commit to at least one visit per half term to work with a group of students to engage, educate and empower the team to make a difference.

Targeted Cohort

This will engage Years 4 & 5 (P5 & P6 in Scotland, Years 5 & 6 in Northern Ireland), with our Community Champion working with groups of around 10-12 pupils. The pupils will be interested in sustainability and want to make a positive difference within their community.

Asda Futures

Discover hidden careers, build employability skills, and become career ready

Let's discover hidden careers within Asda to help you feel empowered, career ready, and confident. Aspire to achieve a career by building positive relationships with professionals and understand a clear career pathway.

The Content

The journey will mean that the young people will work alongside professionals from areas such as Human Resources, Marketing, Product Design, Buyers, Data & Technology, Finance, Logistics, Distribution and Retail Management.

They will be set a challenge of designing an new product and through various sessions at Asda House they will work with mentors who will help develop their idea. The teams will then be invited along to a competition event to present their ideas. The winning teams will be offered an employability experience.

Why should your school engage in this programme?

We offer a journey throughout the business to discover hidden careers as well as engage with a national employer.

We will encourage positive relationships with a number of professionals that will improve confidence as well as developing key employability skills.

We will offer various opportunities throughout the year, including links to Unifrog and SpringPod careers fairs, mock interviews and virtual work experience.

We will hit various Gatsby Benchmarks such as 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 (&1 if you were to be part of the programme) as well as develop key employability skills.

The Vision

To create empowered young leaders through the development of key employability skills such as confidence, teamwork and public speaking. They will become aware of hidden careers within Asda through a 'concept to shelf' journey and will be offered key employability opportunities such as taster days/interviews.

The Plan

We will create confident, empowered leaders of the future who feel they can engage in their school life so they can develop employability skills and aspire to achieve. To engage the learners, we will create sessions that follow the cycle of a product - a concept to shelf journey - giving each team a challenge to complete throughout the year as well as discover hidden careers along the way.

Through the provision of a workbook, pupils can track their journey and progress. We will offer groups taster days, mock interviews as well as opportunities to present ideas so they can become aware of what Asda has to offer as well as develop their confidence in public speaking.

At the end of the year, they will be invited to a celebration event where teams will compete for a prize. This will be a golden ticket to an employability experience.

Targeted Cohort

This will engage Years 9 & 10 (S3 & 4 in Scotland, Years 10 & 11 in Northern Ireland), who have the potential to achieve and who have the aspirations to work within a business role and become a future leader. We would encourage groups of 10-12 pupils with at least 80% of the cohort being FSM/Disadvantages from minority ethnic backgrounds such as Black Caribbean, Roma/Gypsy, and Pakistani or SEND.
